What is Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS)?

The DMLS method of 3D printing, also known as Selective laser melting (SLM), uses a process of binding material in powder form similar to selective laser sintering (SLS).

A powerful laser melts the powder in a 2D format that represents a single layer. Then the substrate is lowered, a new layer of powder is applied and the melting process is repeated to create the next layer. Layer by layer, the 3D printer eventually creates the entire object.

However, unlike SLS technology, with DMLS, all printed parts must be attached to the substrate, which avoids bending the object. After 3D printing, the produced part requires a heat treatment that eliminates residual stress in the part itself and its deformation. Then, the part is removed from the work table with the help of wire erosion machine (Electrical Discharge Machine EDM).

To achieve the proper finish with DMLS technology, it is necessary to combine CNC machines, sandblasting, sanding or other types of processing tools.
